Carlos Castaneda’s Tensegrity

Father Sun, Mother Moon:
Mother Sun, Father Moon

Riccione, Rimini Area, Italy

Thursday, November 27 to

“Today, you remembered an event that sums up your total life...You are always faced with a situation that is the same as the one that you never resolved.”
                                                                              - Don Juan Matus

One afternoon, Florinda Donner-Grau, Carlos Castaneda and a small group of apprentices gathered at a studio in Santa Monica to practice magical passes that deepened one’s connection with the energy of the sun and the moon.
At a certain point, Florinda Donner-Grau directed the apprentices to rearrange themselves from scattered locations around the room into a unique configuration: each paired, some with the same and some with the opposite gender, one partner standing over the other, who was sitting on the floor.
“What do you feel in these positions,” Carlos Castaneda cued the apprentices with a smile.
“I feel overpowered,” spoke up one young woman who was sitting on the floor in front of another woman standing over her. “I feel like a child in front of my mother!”
“I feel protected and adored,” stated one young man at the foot of a young woman. “I feel like I never want to leave!”
“And I feel respected, and strong,” stated a young man standing over another man.
“And I feel weak, as I did in front of my father’s eyes,” said his partner who was sitting on the floor. “In fact I remember being a boy, sitting at the dinner table in front of my father, telling me something that I had done wrong.”
“Excellent!” exclaimed Carlos Castaneda rubbing his hands together with glee. “However you showed up for dinner then is how you show up for life now!
“Placing you in these positions can show you how you acted then and now in the face of ‘authority’ – having it or not, protected by it or not – someone telling you what to do, or not giving you permission to act.”
“As children,” Florinda Donner-Grau added, “we are dependent; we have no choice. We absorb from our surroundings; we imitate what we see, feel and hear. And often, we mature following paths that may not be our own.”
“And how do we follow our own paths, our own dreams?” piped up an eager male apprentice.
“One key is knowing what each of your parents has given you – seen and unseen, dark and light,” continued Florinda, “without judgment, without disdain, accepting these qualities inside of yourself as your own.”
“With this awareness, another aspect of yourself – the mystery, the unexplained – enters in. Then evolution is possible – evolving beyond the ‘authority’ of your family line towards becoming the ‘co-author’ along with spirit, of new dreams, relevant to now!”

A blending and flowering of the My Sister the Moon, My Brother the Moon and the Greater than Greed: Love workshops, this workshop focuses on a review of ourselves in light of our primary role models – our parents, grandparents, guardians – who form the seat of our socialization, our acculturation.

In this workshop, magical passes and specific review exercises will be practiced for the purpose of recognizing the many gifts we have received, and having choice in how to apply them in living our dreams and in viewing the world through loving eyes rather than culture’s eyes.

In order to elicit and enhance this awareness, everyone is asked to bring a cane – approximately one yard/one meter tall, with a round, curved hook at one end – to practice a special series of magical passes specifically designed for blending the attributes of male and female, sun and moon inside, and extending them out into the world.

A preliminary exercise on our individual family tree will be given upon registration; it is best to register as early as possible to allow ample time to complete.

And please note: This workshop also fulfills the requirement for the Stalking the Human Form II workshop which will take place in Amsterdam in Spring of next year (2009).

Tensegrity is
the modern version of magical passes: movements and positions of body and breath discovered by men and women shamans who lived in Mexico in ancient times, and taught to Carlos Castaneda, Florinda Donner-Grau, Taisha Abelar and Carol Tiggs by their teacher, don Juan Matus, a Yaqui Indian from Sonora, Mexico and Yuma Arizona, and the heir to the lineage of those ancient shamans. The word Tensegrity was coined by architect and dreamer R. Buckminster Fuller, and is a combination of tension and integrity, which Carlos Castaneda saw as a perfect description of the driving forces of the magical passes, and of the way of being that don Juan Matus taught him: giving equal attention to all parts of our being, all aspects of our actions with others, all parts of the scene we are in, and how they interrelate.
